PICTURES: Haywards Heath Town record fifth straight win

Heath welcomed back Max Miller to the squad this week but away were Rob O’Toole, Danny Turner and Jordan Harris. Tome Graves was once again available for selection after serving a 3 match ban and took his place amongst the substitutes.

The Line up was Simon Lehkyj in goal, the back line remained the same as the prior 3 games of Scott Marshall, Bailie Rogers, Mike Gardner and Josh Bryant. In midfield Carl Dunk had recovered from the groin injury he picked up the previous week and again partnered by Ryan Warwick. Matt Geard was handed a start in midfield also. Both Max Miller and Jamie Weston held the wide positions, Phil Gault returned to the starting 11 up front. Nathan Cooper, Charlie Miles and Tom Lyons were amongst the Subs.

For the third game in a row Heath were quick out of the blocks, with only 3 minutes gone Jamie Weston drove into the box, his effort on goal was only parried by the Langney Wanderers keeper and Matt Geard smashed home the loose ball.

Heath should have doubled their lead after 5 minutes but Phil Gault was unable to find the back of the net. Heath then had a strong penalty appeal turned down as Jamie Weston went over after a Langney Wanderers tackle in the box. On 36 minutes Josh Bryant was disappointed he could not keep his header on target.

In a half littered with fouls and continuous stoppages the game never flowed and neither side could get any free flowing football going. Ryan Warwick picked up a yellow card for a late challenge. with 40 minutes gone Langney Wanderers finally sparked into life and almost levelled the score just before the break as the Langney Wanderers striker hit the Heath post from 9 yards with a good header.

Heath were slow out of the blocks after the break and it was Langney Wanderers who started to pile on the pressure, on 50 minutes the Langney Wanderers striker found some space and it was just a small touch from Heath keeper Simon Lehkyj that sent the ball out to safety. On 54 minutes Langney Wanderers again went close but Simon Lehkyj was again equal to the strike tipping the ball over the bar.

This latest scare seemed to wake Heath up as they retook control of the game, Ryan Warwick who had been having another great game laid the ball into youngster Bailie Rogers path but his strike went just over. As the game heated up Bailie Rogers picked up a yellow card after reacting to a challenge made on Jamie Weston by a Langney Wanderers player.

On 66 minutes Nathan Cooper replaced goal scorer Matt Geard in the middle of the park to provide that extra cover.

Heath then turned up the pressure on Langney Wanderers as Jamie Weston went close on 3 occasions, first his strike was well blocked and cleared to safety, then his strike a minute later went just past the post. On 72 minutes the Langney Wanderers keeper was called into action to prevent Heath doubling their lead as Jamie Weston’s strike was well saved. Phil Gault then went close but couldn’t convert.

On 76 minutes it looked as though Heath would rue their missed chances as Langney Wanderers drew the game level, a corner in saw Heath unable to clear the danger and the Langney Wanderers midfielder headed home from close range.

With time running out the game seemed to be heading for a draw but it was Heath who would have the last say. On 85 minutes Max Millers corner found Nathan Cooper at the far post and his header back across goal was met by Jamie Weston who headed home past the Langney Wanderers keeper from 12 yards,

The final piece of action of the game again produced a smart stop from the Langney Wanderers keeper as Carl Dunk fierce drive from 25 yards was pushed away at full stretch.

Man of the Match - Awarded to both Ryan Warwick and Jamie Weston, Ryan has been growing from strength to strength and again today showed great creativity and Jamie always looked a constant threat and thoroughly deserved to get his goal and Heath’s winner today.

Afterwards manager Shaun Saunders said: “Langney Wanderers were always going to be tough opposition and I’m please we have come though the game, got the three points and continued our winning run.”
