Pompey in no rush to do deals

POMPEY are refusing to panic in their pursuit of players.

The Blues are staying relaxed as they continue their search for summer recruitments.

Chief executive Mark Catlin has ruled out putting a timeframe on when signings need to be concluded by.

Pompey have landed two players so far as Paul Cook reshapes his squad for his second campaign at the club.

Matt Clarke has arrived from Ipswich as part of deal which took Adam Webster to Portman Road, with £700,000 going into the Fratton Park coffers.

And Danny Rose has joined from Northampton after rejecting a new deal with the League Two winners.

That’s the total of Pompey’s business so far, but the club have busy working on a host of prospective arrivals.

Plenty of other outfits have been much more active in their business, however.

Crawley have already recruited a huge seven new faces after a season of struggle.

Josh Payne, Glenn Morris, Jason Banton, Enzio Boldewijn, Chris Arthur, Yusuf Mersin and Josh Yorewith have all gone to Broadfield Stadium.

And Doncaster have brought in six players after being relegated from League One.

Gary McSheffrey, Joe Wright, Mathieu Baudry, Matty Blair, Tommy Rowe and Ross Etheridge have all been signed by Darren Ferguson.

Mansfield have also signed six players so far with George Taft, Rhys Bennett, Ashley Hemmings, CJ Hamilton, Adi Yussuf and Danny Rose recruited by Adam Murray.

Carlisle have landed five men with Keith Curle recruiting shrewdly to get Nicky Adams, Joe McKee, Jamie Devitt, Reggie Lambe and Russell Penn.

Leyton Orient (Gavin Massey, Callum Kennedy, Robbie Weir and Jason Doherty) and Hartlepool (Jake Orrell, Nicky Deverdics, James Martin and Ben Pollock) have both signed four players to date.

It is likely to be a quiet week at Pompey, with no new deals currently nearing completion.

Everything remains on course, though, and the club are comfortable with their position in terms of recruitment.

Catlin said: ‘There’s no timeframe (for signings). It’s as and when particular deals fall into place.

‘We’ve spoken to the board and we’ve spoken to Paul (Cook). Then they’ll get done as and when.’

Pompey have until August 31 when the transfer window closes to complete their business.

That will be there last chance to recruit until January with the emergency loan window being scrapped.

Pompey could again look at triallists, as they did last year when signing Gareth Evans and Ben Davies.

That inevitably lends itself to deals being done later in the summer with warm-up games throughout July.

Catlin said: ‘Historically, deals get done quite late in the last week or two leading up to the start of the season.’

‘You always get triallists. Ben Davies and Gareth Evans were both triallists.

‘You always get gems so you have to keep a bit of money in reserve for that.’
