And he wants to be in the team that take to the pitch against Wycombe next month.

He said: “We are still gelling and getting to know each other, but as the games come hopefully we can be a tight unit come August 6.

“I want to try and effect to game as much as can and bring what I can to the team. If I have a chance to shoot and I am going to try and shoot and if I can set up a goal, I will do that.

“It’ll come, the chances and positions you get into are down to your decision making.

“The style of play, looking to play football that is right up my street and I am happy to be in the side playing. Hopefully, I can carry on working hard and getting a place in the team.

“I want to bring as much as I can for the team, goals and assists and be a team player. That is what I think the team needs, everyone being together.”

Roberts began his senior career at Aldershot after coming through the Arsenal academy, where Reds head coach Dermot Drummy was positioned, although they didn’t work together.

He is now keen to put in the hard yards during pre-season to make sure he is fighting fit come the start of the league campaign.

Roberts added: “It was tough, but you have to put the fitness in if you want to be fitter and better players, you get the recovery and rest back and go again next week.

“You want to get on the ball as much as possible, the lads have come in and been brilliant, Dermot has been brilliant and Matty (Gray) has been brilliant.

“It’s a new start for everyone so hopefully everyone can hit the ground running and everyone can see what me and the lads can do on the pitch.

“There is going to be competition in different positions so that will keep you on your toes, you can’t just rest there. Everyone has competition and everyone has to fight for their place every week.
