Rye desperate to get game on

Rye United chairman Clive Taylor is hoping some thawed weather will allow the club to finally play their FA Vase game with Guernsey this weekend.

The Islanders were due to visit last Saturday, but the cold snap meant the game was put back seven days. With Guernsey having to travel to the mainland, a decision will need to be made by this afternoon (Friday).

“We’re obviously desperate to play it,” Taylor said. “We’re praying the pitch thaws but that the rain doesn’t get too heavy as well. We’re making every effort for it to go ahead. We’ve even had a leaf blower on the surface protecting and clearing the touchlines.”

Thanks to the elements, Rye have played just once since Christmas - a 9-1 rout against AFC Uckfield way back on January 5. Fortunately for the hosts, Guernsey haven’t had any match practice since then themselves, with both sides having games called off again earlier this week.
