Rye game off due to drain problem

Rye United are hopeful that there will be no repeat of the drain problem at The Salts.

The temporary drains that were laid for the portable buildings currently acting as changing rooms became blocked and caused tonight’s (Wednesday) game against Ringmer to be postponed.

With standing water from the recent rain still obvious around the area, Rye chairman Clive Taylor said this morning: “There’s some sort of blockage down there, and the toilets and showers are out of order.

“I’ve got someone coming down today, but there’s no guarantee that it’s going to be sorted (in time for the match). Once it is sorted, though, it should be okay.”

The drains were blocked just a couple of weeks or so previously and one attempt to clear them with contractors only sorted the problem for a few days.

Despite the call-off, Rye are well up with their fixtures this season. They reach Christmas having played 22 of their 38 Sussex County Football League Division One matches and have a maximum of four cup ties remaining.

Contrast that with this time last term when Rye had only completed 13 league games and were still involved in four knockout competitions, resulting in a crazy pile-up of matches towards the end of the campaign.
