Rye into another cup semi-final

Rye United reached the semi-finals of a county football competition for the second time in four days.

The Sussex County League Division One leaders booked their place in the last four of the Sussex RUR Charity Cup with a 4-2 win at home to Oakwood on Saturday.

Goals from Matt Maclean, Scott Ramsay and Luke Woodley put Rye three-up at half time. Division Two strugglers Oakwood cut the gap to 3-2 before Sam Adams made sure for Rye with a late fourth.

Elsewhere it was a bad weekend for the area’s Sussex League clubs. Sidley United lost 2-1 away to Worthing United in Division One despite taking the lead through Allan McMinigal on his return to the club.

Bexhill United conceded three times in the first nine minutes en route to a 3-1 reverse at home to Storrington in Division Two. Josh Elliott-Noye pulled one back after Storrington were reduced to 10 men.

Little Common’s run of three consecutive wins and clean sheets in the same division came to an end with a 2-1 loss away to Rustington. Anthony Cooper scored Common’s goal.

Also in Division Two, Westfield went down 2-0 at home to Dorking Wanderers. Full reports on each of these matches will appear in Friday’s Observers.
