Rye target John O’Hara glory

The Quarterboys have the chance to put a trophy in the cabinet today (Friday) when they take on Three Bridges in the Sussex County Football League John O’Hara League Cup final at the County Ground, Lancing, kick-off 11am.

Assistant manager Andy Laskey said: “Although we had a great run in the (FA) Vase and it’s a memory, I think we need something to show for it (the season). I think it would be a bit of a travesty if we don’t get something.”

Bridges are second in the league - three places and seven points above Rye having played three more matches. The Crawley-based side has won its last three league games, while Rye would have an identical record had it not been for a controversial late equaliser at Arundel in midweek.

The teams have met twice so far this season with Rye coming out on top on both occasions. Scott Price’s team won 3-1 after extra time away to Bridges in an FA Vase third round tie during December despite playing more than 85 minutes with 10 men and they cruised home 4-0 in the league meeting at the Salts last month.

Shaun Loft and Paul Watson are likely to be the only absentees for Rye as Danny Leach is expected to recover from a bout of tonsillitis.
