‘Significantly higher operational costs’ – Worthing FC explain ticket price increases

Worthing FC have announced ticket prices for their debut campaign in the top tier of non-league – and have explained why rises are necessary.

The club said: “Last season was a historic one for the club, securing the National League South title and with it promotion to Step 1 of the non-league pyramid for the first time in the club’s 140-year history.

"The role of the supporters was vital in helping the club to secure such a significant achievement, with average home attendances rising to 2,338 – a remarkable increase of 34% from the previous season.

"A club record crowd of 4,002 witnessed the trophy being lifted at the Sussex Transport Community Stadium last month and it was great to see just how much it meant to so many supporters who joined in the celebrations that day.

"Next season promises to be one of the most exciting yet, with the visit of ex-Football League clubs such as Carlisle, Hartlepool United and Southend United, amongst others, to look forward to.

"However, promotion to the National League brings about many challenges, including significantly higher operational costs, and the club is looking to give itself the best chance of competing and stabilising at that level.

"The club would like to thank the Fan Advisory Board for their input and consultation during this process, with the shared aim of finding the right balance between the many factors involved.”

Finance Director Chris Salt commented: “Agreeing prices for next season has involved a wide-ranging set of considerations. Not least, we recognise the substantial demands that will be placed on our cost base to operate in the National League.

"The gap from National League South is substantial, and we want to ensure that we are fit for purpose and can operate at this new level. Alongside this, everyone will know that supporters will no longer be allowed to drink alcohol in view of the pitch, which will reduce the club’s earning potential from secondary sales.”

FAB Chairman Paul Mackay added: “There really hasn’t been a better time to be a Rebel. Following last season’s success, everyone knows just how big a step the club is making in reaching the National League. We know promotion will be expensive and we know that most supporters will understand the need for a step change in prices.

"We also recognise the significant investment the club has made in recent seasons to materially upgrade supporters’ matchday experience. We were delighted to discuss, and agree, a new category of pricing to help young adults aged 19–21 continue to attend matches affordably. We also acknowledge the continued value in an Earlybird season ticket price, offering the equivalent of seven free games.”

As part of the club’s continued commitment to making matches affordable for young adults, a new Under-22 category has been added.
