Stats prove away day misery

IT’S THE last-chance saloon for Pompey’s miserable away record to get one final injection boost.

It’s become an unpleasant – yet horribly familiar – experience for Blues fans as they have endured so many winless away days this term.

Before tomorrow’s trip to Mansfield, it’s just two away victories all season – at Oxford in August and Cambridge in February.

And unless Pompey sign off with a win, it will be the worst return from an away campaign since the club’s last season in the Premier League back in 2009-10, when they recorded just two wins all season.

However, there were four fewer away games in a 20-team division.

Tellingly, it also looks certain to be the worst goals haul on the road since that same season when the Blues mustered just 10 as they slid into administration and tumbled out of the top flight.

This time around, Pompey have scored a paltry 16 goals on their travels – and six of those came at Cambridge in one match.

Last season, the Blues managed five wins on their travels and scored 30 goals in the process – and, surprisingly, that goals total was the third highest in any season going back to 1992-93.

For both of the previous two seasons, which ended in successive relegations, the total reached three wins and both broke through the 20-goal barrier.

It’s no surprise the club’s best away return in 22 seasons was the 2002-03 promotion campaign.

Harry Redknapp’s title-winning side collected 12 wins and scored 45 goals.

But even the 1992-93 term, which saw Jim Smith’s side miss out on promotion, still only managed seven away wins – although the 32-goal haul was the second highest in recent times.

Pompey’s wretched away form is certainly not a new phenomenon.
