‘The wettest spell I’ve known’

Little Common player-manager Russell Eldridge says he can’t recall such a prolonged period with so little football.

The Commoners have played just once since Boxing Day and their last home game was way back on December 7 following the postponement of today’s (Saturday’s) scheduled visit from Mile Oak.

Eldridge said: “Normally you get a couple of weeks off or one week off and then back on, but I don’t think I’ve been involved in a sustained period of time like this.

“It’s not just us; it’s the same for everybody at our level and the higher leagues as well. It’s getting a little bit silly now as such, but there’s nothing you can do. We had a training session at the weekend so it’s just a case of making sure we keep ourselves focused and motivated.”

Fortunately for Common, they are still quite well advanced with their fixtures. Only two teams in Sussex County Football League Division Two have played more league matches and Common have just 11 remaining.

Common remain in sixth place - one position and two points behind crosstown rivals Bexhill United with a game in hand.

Josh Elliott-Noye still has one more match to run on his suspension, while long-term injury victims Charlie Bachellier and Jerome Smith are nearing a return to action, assuming the weather co-operates. Dom Bristow hasn’t required a minor toe operation after all.
