Three Bridges 0 Whyteleafe 0: Bridges miss chances

Just five weeks before this match, Bridges were probably fortunate to escape with a 1-1 draw when they visited Whyteleafe.

The tables were certainly turned on Saturday as Bridges somehow failed to secure all three points, notably in a dominant second half.

The first half was a fairly even affair with a free-kick by Sam Clayton and a shot by Nathan Simpson both going wide for Whyteleafe, while Sam MacVicar, Ben Godfrey and Hakeem Adekakun all tested visiting keeper Adam Highsted.

Injury to MacVicar just before the interval led to him being replaced for the second half by Callum Donaghey, and he had three chances to score for Bridges inside the first six minutes!

His header from Steve Sargent’s corner was denied by the post, his volley from Tony Garrod’s deft lay back was tipped over by Highsted and then he lobbed over the bar as he latched onto a long ball.

In between all this, Godfrey was also denied by the woodwork as he met another Sargent corner, and the second half developed into a seemingly never ending procession of near misses by the home side.

Garrod, Adekakun and Jamie Brotherton all came close, but the worry was that Whyteleafe would somehow sneak one, and it needed another solid display by Bridges’ back-four to nullify the threats offered by Clayton, Shawn Lyle and substitute Roscoe DSane.

The game ended with a cross-shot by Mark Pulling being tipped over rather desperately by Highsted, who then held on well to a solid drive by John Lansdale.

And in the last minute Adelakun sent a decent effort over the bar, whilst the last kick of the game saw Sargent’s free-kick blocked well.

Two points lost perhaps, but Whyteleafe will feel that justice was done following the previous result.
