'We need desperation to put the good play away' - Brighton's Vidosic reflects on dominant Leicester victory

Brighton head coach Dario Vidošić applauded his side's controlled display as a Kiko Seike strike proved sufficient for the Seagulls at the King Power.

Seike’s far-post finish culminated from a slick counter-attack, with Fran Kirby the orchestrator as she played a delightful through ball to Rosa Kafaji. The Swedish winger’s cut back found Seike unmarked to sweep in her seventh goal of the Women’s Super League campaign inside 48 minutes.

The Albion’s dominance and attacking intent could, however, have seen the Foxes punished more greatly. First-half chances fell to Albion’s Seike and Maisie Symonds, with the former impressively flicking an effort narrowly into the outer-side netting with her back to goal.

Meanwhile, the Brighton captain arched her freekick wide of the top-left corner on the 20th-minute mark, with her later long-range effort almost catching Janina Leitzig unawares as the goalkeeper quickly regained her central position to gather Symonds’ shot.

While the Foxes lived on scraps for the majority of the contest as they were forced to instead fend off the Seagulls, winger Alisha Lehmann held the best chance for the hosts in the 28th minute when she burst past Brighton’s Marisa Olislagers and into the box.

The Swiss winger couldn’t apply the finishing touch as she did last weekend when netting her first Foxes goal against Aston Villa, with the forward’s cut back to Shannon O’Brien creating an unfavourable angle for the striker as she fired wide.

While Leicester head coach Rick Passmoor made several changes in the second half with striker Rachel Williams clinching a landmark 200th WSL appearance, the Foxes could only muster up several corners in additional time.

Albion’s 1-0 victory sees the side climb from ninth to sixth in the league table with 20 points from 18 matches.

Brighton head coach Vidošić said on his side's performance: “I think for the vast majority of it there was some really, really good play.

"We implemented a few different ideas throughout the week of how we can combat Leicester and how they play.

“They took more a 4-1-4-1 formation today and then that changed when they threw on some more numbers and left players high.

“The biggest thing to reflect on is in the second half we were sometimes trying to play long passes and when they’re lost and Leicester have already got four on the high line it becomes a little bit scary in those moments.

“So a few things to learn which is always good but a really, really pleasing performance and I think a thoroughly deserved three points.”

On Seike’s return to the side following her Asian Cup victory with Japan: “We have missed her while she has been away.

“We want to try and get as many people into goalscoring opportunities as we can and in the first half we probably didn’t have enough.

“A really good cross would come in and the players were outside the box so we need that now.

“All the good play is almost worthless if it doesn’t get finished off so we need that desperation to get there and put the chances away.

Brighton will now turn their attentions to an FA Cup quarter-final against Arsenal at Meadow Park on Sunday.

“We’re looking forward to it. It’s a fantastic test: we’re going away to the current European Champions,” Vidošić said.

“They’re in a good run of form and had a terrific performance on Saturday in the North London Derby so we know what’s in front of us.

“I think we know the most important thing is that we have the belief. We go there and we want to represent the club and ourselves well.

“We’ll try to play our football and we’ve had some really, really good battles with them of late so I’m looking forward to another one."
