Wet weather wreaks havoc with the weekend football

Heavy rain decimated the local football schedule on Saturday as Horsham’s local derby with Crawley Down was postponed while the Sussex County League fixture list was all but washed out.

Both Horsham and managerless Crawley Down were hoping for a return to form at Gorings Mead but were denied the chance with the referee calling it off late on.

The majority of the pitch looked playable following flash floods earlier in the day, though one patch remained waterlogged and following a pitch inspection at 3.10pm it was called off.

Hornets boss Simon Colbran said: “It is frustrating because it’s just one corner, but to be fair to the ref, he didn’t just come here, have a look at the pitch and say ‘right that’s it’, he’s given it the best chance he can and it was just one corner that wasn’t draining.

“In an hour’s time it’ll be perfectly alright, but we can’t wait forever for that patch to dry up.”

After conceding crucial late goals in both of their last two games, Colbran feels lady luck isn’t exactly smiling on his side.

“It was looking in our favour today but that’s how it’s been of late for us, letting in the late goal on Tuesday. Everybody was so up for this today and I thought we had a really good chance of getting the three points today. But that’s football and you have to just pick yourself up and get on with it.”

In the County League 36 of the 39 scheduled games in both league and cup were definitely off because of the rain, making it the worst weekend of disruption so far this year.
