The Wales international struck after 72 minutes to condemn Wigan to their first loss at DW Stadium this season and leaves the Seagulls just two points off the play-off places.

Crofts looped a header over Lee Nicholls after the Latics keeper denied Jake Forster-Caskey with an instinctive save down to his right and the Seagulls held on despite late pressure.

Moments before the goal Gordon Greer was caught napping by Grant Holt but the former Norwich frontman could only send his shot wide, but it was Tomasz Kuszczak’s late stop that ensured Oscar’s men travelled south with all three points.

Holt’s strong header in the dying moments looked as though it was sneaking into the bottom corner but the Poland international clawed the ball away with a low dive.

The hosts had chances early on in the game, too, with Leon Barnett’s skewed effort in the sixth minute from a corner and then Ben Watson’s ballooned attempt soon after.

Craig Conway came close to doubling the Seagulls’ lead in the closing stages, but Nicholls got a hand to his fizzed effort before Kuszczak’s reflex save to close the game.
