Wimble and Gaskin fire Wick to back-to-back wins

WICK Football Club recorded back-to-back wins for the first time this season, their second in County League Division 1 this season, with a crucial 3-2 win at fellow strugglers Lingfield.

Despite the being delighted with the result, Wick boss Gary Block described as a “disappointing” second-half performance.

He said: “It’s a massive win and a hugely pleasing result, which is the most important thing.

“We didn’t play well, but it’s the result that counts. I thought that a draw would have been fair, and it’s winning these sort of games that’ll keep us up, and I’m optimistic now that we’ve got George (Gaskin) and Rob (Wimble) that we’ll have that cutting edge and start getting the results we need.

“If we had them from the start of the season, I think we’d be mid-table. I’m targeting 40 points, we’re on 10, so I’m confident I can keep them up. They put us under pressure in the second half, but we rode it out and got through it.”

Gaskin fired Wick in front on 18 minutes, and after Ruben French had squandered a chance to double the lead, Wimble duly did the honours on the half-hour to put them in command.

Lingfield pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time, and then equalised on the hour. With the clock ticking down and Wickers on the ropes, a late attack in the 87th minute picked out Wimble, who fired home from a tight angle, and that was the way it stayed.

WICK: Kason; Urquhart, Bradshaw, Bonniface, Brown; Dormer, Bagura, Wilkins, French; Gaskin, Wimble. Subs: Peach, Turney (Wilkins, Dormer 65), Hotson (Urquhart 70).
