Worthing FC’s belief is back – and Hinshelwood was even encouraged in defeat

Adam Hinshelwood is confident Worthing will continue chalking up wins and staying in the thick of the promotion race if they play as they have done in most of their recent games.

And he holds that view despite a 2-1 defeat at Hornchurch last Saturday which saw the hosts leapfrog the Rebels to go second.

They recovered from that loss to win 2-0 at home to another promotion rival, Chesham on Tuesday night – although Hinshelwood was not so impressed by their display in that one.

He was heartened by much of what he saw at Hornchurch – at the end of a week in which Worthing had won at home to Slough and Torquay to reignite their promotion bid.

After going 2-0 down in the first half – despite a bright opening 20 minutes – Worthing fought back well. Teddy Jenks pulled one back soon after the break, they had a strong penalty claim ignored and other chances went begging.

Hinshelwood told us: “I couldn’t fault the second half performance. We deserved something from it and I know that if we keep playing at that level in other games, we’ll be okay.

"It was disappointing to lose the game after the two home wins but I actually we felt we continued the momentum we’d started to build up. The key now is to keep that going for the rest of the season.”

On Tuesday Joel Colbran put the Rebels ahead on 36 minutes and Ollie Godziemski made sure of the win with a second five minutes from time.

Hinshelwood said to club media: “Great result – disappointing performance. But we’ll take those as we’ve played a lot better than that throughout the past few weeks and not got results.

"We’re pleased to grind out results when we haven’t been brilliant."

Worthing – six points off top spot – go to Tonbridge on Saturday then host Maidenhead on Tuesday.
