Former Somerset bowler has Chichester in a spin

On a rather slow pitch, captain Mark Bamford had no hesitation in electing to bat on winning the toss and his decision appeared to be sound as Matt Gregory (38) and George Stephens (22) put on 55 for the first wicket.

But the home side soon found themselves 85 for four with Bamford and Richard Logan (16) at the crease.

The pair batted with patience but found it hard to score freely against the leg spin of former Somerset player Mike Munday (3-47).

Bamford reached 52 before he was removed by Munday as he tried to increase the scoring rate towards the end of the innings.

Chichester were eventually bowled out for 186 from the final ball of their innings and perhaps felt they were 30 short, but nevertheless still felt they had a reasonable total to defend given the slow nature of the pitch.

Chichester did not bowl with the discipline that Horsham did and were unable to build any pressure.

Logan (3-40) was the pick of the bowlers, but Horsham scored freely and reached their victory target for the loss of six wickets.

The margin of victory would have been greater, but Horsham lost three wickets with the score at 171. But the outcome of the game wasn’t in doubt after Owain Jones (64) played the match-winning innings.

Chichester travel to Three Bridges this week after their cricket festival, which concludes against the Duke of Richmond’s XI today (Friday August 5).
