Fortunes mixed for Bognor squash seconds

Bognor squash seconds hosted highly-placed West Worthing V '“ but home advantage did not go in their favour as they lost by the odd match in five and slipped to the bottom of Sussex League division four west.

Bognor had occasional players in the lower positions and the first of these, promising junior George Porter at No5, tried hard against Andrew Jeffey but lost in straight games.

Fourth string Paul Geall came back well in a long third game after going 2-0 down playing Robert Brockwell, but could not capitalise on this, losing 7-9, 2-9, 10-8, 2-9.

Veteran Andy Parker was at No3 but he was out of touch as opponent Jade Weston cruised to a 9-1, 9-2, 9-5 win.

Matters improved for Bognor in the top spots when captain Steve Carruthers won in three against Tony Zottola 9-3, 9-3, 9-6 and first string Alastair Campbell was back to something like his old form when he beat Aaran Morris, also in straight games 9-7, 9-3, 9-6.

The final result was a 3-2 win for West Worthing, who took 14 points to Bognor’s seven.

Bognor seconds welcomed close neighbours Arun Leisure Centre seconds, who put up a good fight before the home team secured a 4-1 win which lifted them off the bottom of the table.

Bognor had Paul Geall at No5 in only his second team game of the season and he had a good battle with Gary Raymond, going to 2-2 before the visitor edged the deciding game to win 6-9, 9-6, 9-3, 4-9, 9-4.

Another five-game encounter followed with home fourth string Steve Darlington up against Simon Asher, who took a close first game before Darlington looked well on top taking the second and an emphatic third.

Asher came back to level but the home player made no mistake in the fifth to secure the tie 7-9, 9-5, 9-0, 5-9, 9-6 and extend his winning run to nine consecutive matches.

Jon Corke was at No3 for Bognor and started well with a 9-0 first-game win, edged the second 10-9 and made sure of his match with a 9-2 third game.

The second string contest proved yet another best-of-five with home captain Steve Carruthers making a good recovery from two games down to level the match and take the decider - score 5-9, 7-9 ,9-4, 9-3, 9-4.

Bognor were now 3-1 ahead with bonus points secured and top string Alastair Campbell added to the tally with a good 9-2, 9-3, 9-2 win against Jonathan Woosley.

The final result was a 4-1 win for Bognor who took 19 points to Arun’s seven.
