Funmi the fastest at West Park

FUNMI SOBODU, at 16, ran on Sunday the fastest 100 metres ever raced on the West Park arena. And he began competing only last year.

The exciting new Worthing Harrier's 10.8sec for their Young Athletes team launched him into a week which brings his international debut for Britain in the World Schools Championships in Thessa-loniki, Greece, tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday.

Ranked No 1 at under-17 in this country after running 10.6sec at Cambridge, he is viewed as a prospect for the London Olympics 2012. Ex-world gold medallist Derek Redmond confirmed this potential: "Funmi has already proved to have many of the star qualities essential to make it in this sport."
