GLORIOUS GOODWOOD: Boom not bust - Hail Hayley as she notches another notable first

Her hard-earned win on the Marcus Tregoning-trained four-year-old was the first time she had visited the winner’s enclosure during festival week.

It came less than three weeks after she became the first female jockey to win a Group 1 race, when she took the Darley July Cup at Newmarket.

Her superb ride held off the challenge of Ted Durcan on Proponent and Neil Callan on Pintura, who were second and third respectively.

She looked genuinely excited to have won the famous race and said: “I think stall one was a big bonus and he’s improving. I’ve won three out of three on him now.

“I think you have to be quite decisive from that draw as you don’t want to get swamped. He really enjoys bowling along in front as he settles well. I don’t know what was going on behind and I think I was in the best place.”

Trainer Tregoning said: “It was a very good ride again from Hayley. Last time we ran him in a Listed race but he just fell short of that.

“I bought him myself for not very much money and it’s a first winner at Goodwood for the owners so it’s great.”

In the other big race of the daty, the Group 2 Richmond Stakes, Richard Hannon-trained Harbour Watch showed why he is being tipped for great things with an impressive win under Richard Hughes - the pair’s fifth win of the 2011 festival.

The evens favourite had been carried across the track by Bogart but Hughes kept the Acclamation colt on track and he won by two and a quarter lengths from Bannock.

Bookies shortened his odds for next year’s 2,000 Guineas - with William Hill cutting him to 10-1 favourite from 16-1.

Hannon said: “Hughesie said he would have won by four or five lengths if he hadn’t been carried wide.

“He’s a very good horse and we’ve got a lot of options now - the Mill Reef, the Middle Park and the Dewhurst.

“I don’t see the point in stepping him up to a mile this year, we may as well stay at a trip he’s good at, but I’ve no doubt at all that he will stay a mile next year.”

Hughes added: “I don’t like comparing horses but his recent work at Herridge has been as good as any two-year-old we’ve had bar Canford Cliffs.”

Hughes’ win in the day’s feature race kept him one victory ahead of Frankie Dettori in the bid to be top Glorious Goodwood jockey for 2011.

The Italian had earlier made it 4-4 between him and last year’s top rider by winning the RSA Thoroughbred Stakes on Neebras (4/1). Western Aristocrat was 11-8 favourite to come out on top, but he struggled to get past long-time leader Chef when push came to shove.

Chef edged out Western Aristocrat by a head for second place.

While Hughes and Dettori have found winners at regular intervals this year, Kieren Fallon hasn’t but he opened his Glorious account for 2011 on Drunken Sailor, who pipped Harris Tweed in a thrilling opener for the Coutts Glorious Stakes.

Harris Tweed made all the running until he was challenged in the final furlong.

Jukebox Jury made his bid towards the centre of the course, but Fallon on the Luca Cumani-trained 9/2 contender finished in fine style to take it by a head.

Goldoni (11/2), ridden by David Probert for Andrew Balding’s yard, clinched the Rothschild Waddesdon Wines Nursery Stakes from Silvestre de Sousa on West Leake Hare.

Chachamaidee (9/2) prevailed in the Group Three Oak Tree Stakes to give Sir Henry Cecil his second win of the week two days after Frankel’s sensational Sussex Stakes win and jockey Tom Queally his third win of the week - moving him into third place in the leading rider stakes.

Dever Dream finished fast to claim second, half a length in front of Law Of The Range.

The card finished with William Buick notching his first win of the week on Brian Meehan-trained 8/1 shot Catfish in the Turf Club Stakes from Ted Durcan, second again, on Albany Rose.
