GOLDS ARE FINALLY SAFE

LITTLEHAMPTON ARE safe. Their victory on Saturday put them above the other early finishers Southwick in the bid to avoid relegation from Division One.

The atmosphere crackled with nervous expectation from well before the kick-off. Players and management looked anywhere between purposeful and panicky and fans arrived with hope of success measured against the worry of failure.

Strong purpose led the way for Golds in the early stages. It took just 12 minutes for them to score what proved to be the decisive goal, by which time another two should have been scored.

Russell Hardwell, so often a dangerous wide player, showed great control to set up Grant Vanson. His first-time strike from 25 yards curled past a stranded Danny Poole in the Sidley goal, and sent the majority of the crowd into near-heaven.
