Battle of Britain and Ryder Cup marked by Horsham golfers

The winners were Keith Gaston-Parry and Trish Bruce with 47 points and they will be presented with the trophy later in the year.

Second came Keith Martin and Jim White with 44 points while third place was shared by Clive Limbrick and Peter Mitchell, with Nairon Khan and Sue Lyons on scores of 43 on countback.

They were closely followed by Keith Rayner and Martin Jesty and John Wrighton and Chris Frogley, also on 43 but losing on countback.

The seniors played a medal competition the following day and Tommy Ward won with a nett score of 68.

Len Coutts and Nairon Khan weresecond and third on countback with 70 points each, and Paul Titlow was fourth on nett 71.

One of the pleasures and benefits of club membership is the opportunity to play in weekend roll-up competitions and two groups who meet up every week are the Saturday Club and the Sunday Strollers.

Club captain Richard Lodge suggested they have their own battle this year with a Ryder Cup-style competition over two weekends in September. The Sunday Strollers took a close lead the first weekend with 9.5

points to 8.5, strongly secured by a 3-0 victory by Russell Bance and Graham Harrison.

The Saturday Club matched the Sunday Strollers in the second leg 9-9 with a final score of 18.5-17.5 to the Sunday Strollers.

Each year the captains from each section of Horsham Golf Club hold a charity day competition to raise funds for the chosen charity, which this year is Juby

Lee Bakes. This is a small charitable group based in Thakeham that provides baking-based work experience for young adults who have learning disabilities, or for whom formal education has ended.

The group promotes inclusive communities offering the opportunity for mainstream schools and colleges to work alongside, gaining insight into learning disabilities.

Jane White, ladies captain 2018 – 2020, handed over a cheque for £1400 to Tony Bright of QEII School, bringing the total raised over the year by the club to just over £6,114.

The competition took place over two days, played slightly apart as the weather on the first day was very wet and windy.

The format was individual Stableford and the winner on the first day was Keith Rayner with 42 points, Nigel Croy was second with 38 and Shaun Moloney third with 38 on countback.

On the second day the winner was Jeremy Simpson with 42 points, Kim Limbrick second with 40, and Jenny Elliott coming in third with 39.
