Bognor golf day is fitting tribute to Daniel

The runners-up in the Daniel Hoare charity day at Bognor GC

There was an excellent total of 136 players, including members from Bognor GC and visitors from Worthing, Littlehampton, Hill Barn, Ham Manor, Cowdray and Rustington.

The weather was kind and there was music from the Fabulous Tomato Brothers. The golf was followed by a barbecue, enjoyed by the golfers and their guests.

The competition was a fourball team event with three Stableford scores to count per hole. It was also a bogey-ball event so one out of the four scores had to count on each hole.

In third place with 121 points were the winners of the event in 2012, Jake Stoneham, Scott Bingham, George Bingham and Ryan Maskell. Second on countback with 121 were club secretary James Maclean, James Ashman, Craig Johnson and Toby Tree.

Winners with 124 were Paul Jarvis, Andy Dennahy, Colin Whitehall and Colum Hickland.

Daniel’s friends and family were invited to an evening disco and buffet. The prizegiving and charity auction took place, with the auction alone raising a fantastic £1800.

There was also a nearest-the-pin blind sweep on the fifth hole raising £580. Sponsorship of the 18 holes raised £450. A raffle helped boost the day’s total to £4,600 which has been donated to the British Heart Foundation.

The total raised over four years is a magnificent £15,000.

The club and Daniel’s family thanked all who played or supported the event in other ways.

Fifty-five ladies from Bognor GC played in their annual medal and buttons competition. The weather and course were perfect and great scores were achieved.

The winner was Jane Russell with a nett 67, five under par. Jackie Chamberlain was second with 68.

Other scores: Heather Tidy 70, Chloe Court 70, Lyn Harbutt 70, Berit Smallcorn 70, Val Robertson 73, Sara Stoneham 73, Carmel du Plessis 73 and Sally Cameron 73.

A total of 54 ladies played in the annual members’ day Texas scramble. Incorporated into the day was the ladies’ captain’s charity day which was rescheduled from earlier in the year after bad weather.

Ladies teed off at 9.30am but by 11am the forecast rain arrived. By 1pm the rain was playing havoc with the golf and several groups

abandoned the game. However, great scores were achieved by Chloe Court’s team of Sian Southern, Wendy Johnson and Janet Carter with a gross score of 63.8.

Second were Gill Twyford, Sue Meloy, Maureen Gray and Anne Bushell with 67.1; third Lynn Miller, Sheila Sergeant, Barbara Evans and Sue Redman with 69.1.

Bognor seniors held their very popular senior captain’s prize day, with 80 players taking part in the four-man team and indvidual Stableford.

The weather was again kind and the shotgun event was followed by a barbecue.

The team event saw all four scores count and remarkably three teams each scored 142 points. They were Team A (Brian Wolstencroft, Steve Flack, John Samain and Richard Kaemena); Team B (Clive Millett, Ray Pepperell, Phil Lee and Gerry O’Neill) and Team C (Terry Kuhler, John Owen, Bob Lee and Mike Watts).

The Captain’s Trophy was won by Mike Watts with 42 points, second was Alastair MacDonald with 41 points and third on countback Richard Kaemena. Senior captain Allan Delves presented the prizes and he and his wife Margaret supplied refreshments on the first tee.

Allan also presented the early-season trophies to the winners. The Reg Pain Cup went to Steve King and the Woody Pairs went to Tony Wells and Mike Oates.

SELSEY

The Selsey captain’s day medal took place on a sunny day and was won by Scot Davison with nett 64. Billy Aspital, the the youngest member of the club, was runner-up with 67.

The July Cup attracted a field of 38 – a good number considering many had played the day before. This is a pairs competition and the winning pair were Barry Rishman and Tony Lee with 75 points. Runners-up were Nigel Hillier and Iain Jones with 74.

The Ronnie Edwards competition is a popular one. On the evening before the competition, players enjoy a dinner in the clubhouse.

After the meal, the teams are drawn ready for the next day. Play started at 8am on a fine but cloudy day. The winning pair was Barry Rishman and Andy Campbell with 66.5 points. Simon Rishman and Vic Wade came second with 67.5.

The Seal Badge competition was played on a warm day. Winner was Billy Aspital with nett 66 and Keith Homer, the club’s president, was runner-up with nett 68.

In wet and windy conditions, the RNLI Medal was played in two handicap-based divisions. Brian Blackman won the first division with nett 70 and Simon Rishman won the second with the same score. All entry fees were donated to the RNLI.

CHICHESTER

An excellent day for golf saw the Cathedral course in fine condition as the Chichester veterans competed for the Claret Jug Stableford. Following the previous week’s rain the course was playing longer and this brought the overall scores down from the level of recent weeks.

It was very close at the top with two points covering the first six players. Nick Hobbs posted an excellent 39 points but this was beaten by Mike Snuggs who came in with 40.

In the end though it was a triumph for perseverance as Paul Compton stood on the 18th four points behind and proceeded to birdie the hole and win the trophy on countback.

Result: 1 Paul Compton 40pts; 2 Mike Snuggs 40; 3 Nick Hobbs 39; 4 John Allaway 38; 5 Alan Hance 38; 6 Mike Dunckley 38.

The August medal was played in perfect conditions and this was reflected in the scores. The overall winner was Ken Dowinton with nett 63, beating his nearest rivals Bev Shrives-Wrist and Pete Collyer by two.

The competition was notable for two super eagles, the first when Paul Compton holed his second shot on the par-four 11th and the second when David Wren scored the first veterans’ competition hole in one this year on the par-three 15th.

The Chichester veterans’ team continued their fine form at home with victories over Selsey (5-1) and Bognor (6-2). This was followed by three away matches which proved rather more difficult.

The match at Lindfield was fortunate to be played after heavy rain overnight and Chicester made heavy weather of the conditions losing 6-2. Slinfold were next and the game was closer but the home team won 5-3.

Last came a trip to Black Nest, a new fixture this year, and with 15 holes containing water hazards it was home from home for the Chichester players. They certainly seemed to enjoy it as they won 4½-1½ .

COWDRAY PARK

Ladies are invited to a relaxed introduction to golf at Cowdray Park.

The club’s director of golf Tim Allen is running a four-week course next Thursday, September 17 (10am-11am).

The cost is £40 per person including coaching, equipment and coffee.

Cowdray Ladies had an away day at Chiddingfold, where they played a Chiddingfold Rumble. Playing in threes, the format was one score on par fives, two on par fours and all scores on the par threes. The weather was sunny and warm and the scores were amazing:

Results: 1 Judy Stillwell, Pat Wallace and Jenny Nicholls 85pts; 2 Margaret Curwood, Ann Tyrrell and Gayle Blockey 84; 3 Angela Pike, Pat White and Margaret Wharton 83.

LITTLEHAMPTON

The club’s seniors have just finished a very busy period with 11 club matches, the seniors’ championship, two further competitions and the seniors’ open.

In seven away games, Littlehampton lost in each one. The four home matches brought three losses and a win.

The Telford Salver was won by Dennis Osborne, and the RNLI Trophy winner was Keith Leak, with a donation from the players going to the local RNLI.

The seniors’ open was won by Alan Hawkins of Goodwood GC; the runner-up was Barry Wild of Ham Manor GC, and third Chris Cook from Hassocks GC.

The seniors’ championship was played over two rounds of medal play. The best gross score was 155 (80, 75) by Graham Gain; second was Jan De Vries 164 (84, 80) with Russell Ixer third on 164 (78, 86) on countback.

Nett winner was De Vries, 142 (73,69), second was Barry Lambert 143 (70, 73), third Gain 145 (75, 70).
