Golf ace wins county title

Golf talent Paul Nessling has won a county pairs competition.

The Cooden Beach Golf Club assistant professional, 22, teamed up with Giles Velvick, PGA professional at Horam Park Golf Club, to clinch the Sussex Pairs Matchplay title.

The competition had been run over the season, during which pairs battled their way through a number of rounds to reach the finals’ day at Royal Eastbourne Golf Club which featured the two semi-finals and the final.

In the first semi-final, Charles Giddins, of Beauport Park Golf Club, and the unattached David Mills beat Mark Root, of Effingham Park, and the unattached Neil Georges 2&1.

Nessling and Velvick edged out Jason Partridge, of Piltdown Golf Club, and Marcus Groombridge, of Singing Hills Golf Club, 1 up in a second semi-final featuring the top two players in the final SPGU order of merit table in Groombridge and Nessling.

In the 18-hole final, Nessling and Velvick overcame Giddins and Mills 4&3. The win capped a good week for Hastings-based Nessling, who also received notification that he had qualified as a full PGA professional.
