Golf: Adsett’s ace is talk of Cowdray Park

A total of 21 Cowdray ladies invited friends from far and wide to play a two-ball Ambrose scramble, a form of Texas scramble.

Prizegiving followed a summer buffet with the overall winners Pat Johns from Cottesmore and her partner Tessa Stockwell, vice-captain of Cowdray.

Cowdray ladies held their annual Captain v Vice Captain match. Despite the odd downpour, wind and a hail-storm, the ladies played bravely on and the match resulted in a win for the lady captain.

Cowdray Park held their annual medal competition for the Ted Norman Trophy and it proved a close-fought affair, with three players tying for first place.

The title went to Tony Humberstone, who gained the verdict on countback from Ashley Morgan and Roger Murphy, all three players returning scores of 67 nett.

Just one shot further back came Andy Salmon with 68 and next was Roger Howard on 70.

Five players tied on 71 – in order of countback, they were Trevor Challen, old warrior Dave Hirons, Ben Shotter, Chris Bowles and Phil Pett.

Cowdray Park seniors travelled to Rowlands Castle and were relieved to find that the previous day’s heavy rain had merely freshened the course, which was in good condition.

Match manager Chris Hoare led the way, partnering Philip Singer to a one-up win by putting out on the 18th green to secure the win after a close struggle. A similar story came when Cowdray doubled their advantage to 2-0, with Mike King and Mike Holden also winning by one up, having been four up at one stage.

The home side won the following two matches to level before Cowdray edged ahead again courtesy of another pair of Mikes, Hughes and Cardiff.

The visitors’ lead was shortlived as Rowlands Castle won the next match but Nick Austin and Ralph Fanshaw won 2&1 to give Cowdray a 4-3 lead with one match still on the course.

Brian Carpenter and Ian Goodall proved too strong for their opponents to win 4&3 and give their side a 5-3 win, their third away victory this season.

Cowdray Park Golf Club chairman Terry Adsett scored the third hole-in-one of his career when he aced the par-three 11th hole in a recent friendly fourball.

Bognor’s seniors had club matches against Worthing and The Dyke and in the Reg Pain Trophy.

They were at home to Worthing and after being 3-1 up after four pairs, Bognor just hung on, and ran out 5-3 winners.

Performance of the day was clearly John Owen and Richard Hedge’s 5&4 win over old friends Maurice Huggett and Frank Phillips.

In the second club match, Bognor travelled to The Dyke. Most games were close-fought with the majority going to the 17th or 18th hole.

The exception was the Bognor pair Brian Madgwick and Gary Steventon who suffered a 9&8 loss, apparently down to exceptional play by their opponents. The Dyke eventually won 5-3.

A total of 60 seniors turned out in cold, damp conditions for the Reg Pain Trophy, which doubles up as the Fletcher second round.

Some excellent scores were posted despite the weather and the winner with 40 points was Steve King. Second on countback was Peter McCormack, third on 38 Malcolm Dodds and fourth on countback Dave Chalmers.

Bognor’s Optimus team travelled to play Slinfold and came away with an excellent 10-2 win. Bognor were 3-1 up after the morning foursomes and won the afternoon singles 7-1. Bognor have been drawn home to Crowborough Beacon in the third round to be played this Saturday.

The Wednesday Evening League team won 4-1 at home to Littlehampton on a glorious sunny evening, with the top performance of the night from Watson and Redmond.

Results: Simon Watts & Richard Beresford won 7&6, John Cable & Ron Stevens won 1up, Ian Hendry & Russel Braham won 4&2, Ian Paine & Matt Nelmes lost 1 down, Mark Watson & Rob Redmond won 8&7.

Bognor’s greens committee have decided to carry out some drainage work on three greens over the autumn-winter period.

To support this work there will be a number of special ‘drain the greens’ competitions, where all the proceeds will go to the project.

The first competition saw 84 men and ladies play in a four-player team shotgun start event, with three scores counting on each hole. Club captain Simon Watts presented the fun prizes to the top five teams.

Results: 1 Brian & Sue Meloy, Barbara Trenchard and Ron Stevens 119pts; 2 Gee & Marge Fenwick, John Harnett and Robbie Hughes 118; 3 Chris Johnson, Alan Entecott, Ian Pettie and Willie Dunn 116.

Forty-five seniors played in a midweek Stableford. Conditions were excellent, as was the course, and the scores reflected them. Winner with 40 points was Gerry O’Neill, second with 38 was organiser Frank Hodder and third with 37 Paul Archer.

Bognor sent two teams to play in the Chichester seniors’ open and Bognor A – Mike Oates, David Turner, Steve King and Dave Chalmers – won first prize in the four-man team event, with 14 clubs participating. The competition was superbly managed by the Chichester seniors and the Cathedral course was in great condition.
