Golf: Conditions are a test for Bognor ladies

The overall winners with 73 points were Sue Monger and Sally Cameron, with 40 morning points and 33 in the afternoon. Second went to Sue Crossen and Lin Harbutt with 72 points; Chloe Court and Janet Carter were third with 69 and Chris Puddicombe Sheila Sargeant fourth with 68.

An alternative 18-hole foursomes Sstableford was played and was won with 39 points by Lynn Miller and Ann Bushell. Runners-up were Mary Hardy and Brigitte Paul on 35; third Beryl Payne and Val Robertson with 34 on countback from Jane Finch and Jackie Chamberlain.

The Langmead Challenge Trophy is a 36-hole medal competition played over two weeks. Fantastic golf was played especially by June Salt who had a nett 68 in round one.

The second week brought incredible golf by Wendy Pettie with a nett 66 closely followed by Lin Harbutt with 67. Penny Entecott had an amazing eagle three on the par-five 18th.

Bognor’s Captain’s Day attracted well over 140 members. Simon Watts, club captain for 2015, chose The Samaritans as his charity for the year.

As usual the bar and catering staff were kept very busy at the gazebo and all players were treated to a barbecue.

After early rain, the sun finally appeared and the airflow golf provided a great distraction and the nonsense heard about swing speed, tee height, club choice, wind direction and other factors was a sheer delight. Longest airflow drive was achieved by Kevin Holland while a mighty knock from Lynn Miller secured her the ladies prize.

In the day’s competition, John Hartnett scooped the over-65s’ award, Paul Oliver was best scratch man on the day and in-form Lynn Miller won the ladies’ prize ahead of Nicki Vincent, who nicked second from Sian Southerton on countback.

In the men’s event, a three-way tie on 43 saw Dave Wood just miss out as Jason Wickham took third and Chris Hickling secured second on countback. Overall winner by a distance was Willie Dunn, whose 47 was out of sight.

Raffle proceeds went to The Samaritans.

Matt Kirby, Bognor’s professional, kindly co-sponsored the ladies’ nearest-the-pin and Heather Tidy and Sian Southerton now have appointments to sharpen up their games. Richard Longhurst grabbed the 15th nearest-the-pin and some great shots saw Billy Darby carry off two prizes.

It was a wonderful event for Watts and he thanked all for turning out and helping. A staggering £1,500 was raised for The Samaritans.

Bognor seniors hosted Corhampton on a beautiful summer’s day. The game switched from end to end and ended in an honourable 4-4 draw, though Mike Oates and John Owen threw away a three-hole advantage over the last four holes to halve their match.

Bognor seniors held their annual team event, kindly organised by David Turner once again. An excellent 64 players played in windy conditions. There were some magnificent scores considering the conditions.

COWDRAY PARK

Cowdray Park’s Monthly Medal provided mixed fortunes for players in the three divisions.

In division one, nine players scored par or better; in two, five achieved the feat, while in division three, only two managed it.

Former captain Sean Gallagher won division one with 66, on countback from Kevin Raishbrook, while Phil Harrison showed a welcome return to form recording 69.

In division two, Roger Howard took pride of place with 67, from Scott Evans with 68. Close behind came Ken Marjoram and Dave Fowler.

And in division three, Andrew Pay matched Sean Gallagher’s score of 66, and had his handicap reduced by three while Steve Hathaway was the only other player to beat par, with 68.

Cowdray Park seniors faced the West Surrey Sages in a return fixture, with the Sages having won the home tie 5-3. This time Cowdray prevailed 5.5-2.5 with home advantage.

The lead tie was again closely contested with seniors’ captain Sam Howes and John Doran battling well for a half, before vice-captain Derek Smith and Mike Cardiff enjoyed a stunning 6&4 win.

Ken Marjoram and Phil Harrison fought to win 3&1 and a similar margin was achieved by Paul One and Graham Evans before the Sages recorded their first win.

David Heard and Brian Brockhurst and Mike Hughes and Rob Doney both won 2&1 to complete the Cowdray win.

Cowdray seniors seem to have developed an affinity for Pyecombe, having won various team and individual open tournaments at the hilly course, while winning fiive out of eight inter-club matches there in recent years as well as all their home games against the same opponents.

Cowdray’s very proud match manager during this period has been Roy Penrose and he teamed up with Ken Marjoram for a narrow two-up win.

Seniors’ vice-captain Derek Smith paired up with Brian Brockhurst for a 3&2 win before David Tilley and George Crouch won one up.

The success continued courtesy of John Doran and seniors’ captain Sam Howes, who won 4&2, and David Heard and Chris Hoare won 6&5 and Nick Austin and Howard Morley won 3&1 to make it 6-1 before the home side reduced the arrears.

Cowdray seniors made the short journey to face neighbours Petersfield on a sunny day and the Petersfield greens were quick.

The score of 7.5-0.5 to the hosts does not tell the whole story, as two matches were lost by one down and three by 2&1.

The reliable pair of Richard Histed and Pat Bonner were the only Cowdray pair to avoid defeat.

Cowdray ladies competed in the Bowyers Cup and Stowers Cup on a day of changeable weather. The Bowyers Cup is a scratch competition for silver division players. The winner with a score of 87 was Sue Brown and the runner-up was Jill Parry with 89.

The Stowers Cup for bronze players was closely contested with Brenda Rees winning on 97 followed by Mary Bainbridge with 99.
