Golfers through to national last 16

Sedlescombe Golf Club has progressed to the last 16 of The Mail on Sunday National Golf Club Classic.

The Kent Street-based club continued its remarkable run with a play-off victory away to Chelmsford-based Crondon Park GC in round seven.

Mick Anthony halved a very close top match against Lee Willis after the Sedlescombe man just missed a putt on the 18th to win.

Paul Davis recovered from two down after nine to record a solid 3&2 success against Tony Martin, while Ray Smith preserved his unbeaten record in the competition with another good two up triumph against Andrew Baker.

But Trevor Saull-Hunt lost 4&3 after being on the receiving end of a fine performance from Chris Aukett and Lee Salmon lost a close bottom match 2&1 against Crondon Park club champion Glynn Williams.

This left the match level at 2.5-2.5 and so, for the first time in the competition, Sedlescombe went to a play-off with Salmon and Williams going back to the first.

Although Salmon had lost to Williams in regulation play, the tables were turned in the play-off as the Sedlescombe player struck his approach from 160 yards to eight feet and two-putted for the winning point.

Sedlescombe’s reward is a home tie against Leatherhead GC on Sunday August 19. As well as Crondon Park, Sedlescombe have knocked out Nizels, Weald of Kent, Royal Eastbourne, Wellshurst and Littlestone.

One more victory will put Sedlescombe through to the quarter-finals at Marriott Worsley Park in Manchester on September 23 and 24. The semi-finals and final will take place in Spain during November.
