Mannings Heath stableford winner makes most of bumper bonus

Mel Coventry carded an impressive 53 stableford points after making the most of a double points bonus at Mannings Heath.

Each competitor could nominate five holes for double points, and ten handicapper Coventry comfortably won the Silver Division, nine points clear of Sam Barnes (44), with Doreen Dinnage third (41). Julie Hill was the pick of the Bronze Division on 38.

In the junior stableford, a heavy Kingfisher course did not faze big-hitting captain Luke Bennett, who posted 12 pars and a birdie for 35 points. Josh Budd pipped Jack Holmwood for runner-up spot on countback with 33.

Heath’s seniors meanwhile saw their hopes of winning the CLAWS winter league seriously dented by a 3-2 away defeat to hitherto winless Surrey Downs, their two successes coming from Dave Cocker with Nigel Billingham and Mike Hart with Robert Hails. Elsewhere, champions-elect Slinfold recorded an impressive 4-1 away win at Wildwood with two rounds remaining.
