GP2 racer Jolyon Palmer eyes a final flourish

Southwater’s Jolyon Palmer is targeting further victories this weekend as he brings his most successful GP2 season to date to a close at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit.

Last time out in Singapore, the 22-year-old Carlin driver put in one of the performances of the season to clinch victory in the Feature Race, his second such triumph of the season after success in Hungary in July.

From a maiden pole position in the championship, he suffered a slow start but fought back magnificently to close down a 13 second gap to team mate Felipe Nasr and pass him with four laps to go, ultimately winning by 13 seconds.

After dominating the weekend, having also been fastest in practice, Jolyon expects similar results in the final GP2 weekend of the season.

The last time the series raced at the Yas Marina venue, Jolyon secured a maiden podium finish in the ‘GP2 Finals’ event in 2011.

“After over a month off, I’m raring to go again for the final round in Abu Dhabi this weekend,” Jolyon enthused.

“I’ve had a lot of time to prepare for it and I’m feeling confident that we can pick up where we left off in Singapore and finish the season on a high.”

Jolyon’s younger brother Will Palmer, meanwhile enjoyed an excellent debut in the final round of the Radical SR1 Cup at Norfolk’s Snetterton circuit on Saturday October 26.

Will, who joined the series for a one-off drive, just had one day to acclimatise himself to the Radical sports racer.

The young racer enjoyed a thrilling ding-dong battle with championship leader Colin Noble Jr, just losing out to him in both races as the lead switched hands frequently as Will claimed two podiums for the day.

And Will has just confirmed that he will race in the upcoming BRDC F4 Winter Championship with HHC Motorsport.

The 16-year-old recently finished third in the Ginetta Junior Championship with HHC, securing a breakthrough win at Rockingham in September, as well as nine additional podium finishes throughout the season.

HHC enjoyed a successful season in the BRDC F4 Championship, securing three wins with Charlie Robertson, who finished third in the final championship standings.

Will tested the MSV F4-013 F4 car last week at Snetterton, and is optimistic of fighting inside the top 10 of the Winter Championship.
