Gray represents Britain in world event

Gray was part of a four-strong British squad which travelled to China for the global tournament, which was held by the sport’s governing body known simply as ‘The World’.

Soft-tip darts uses a plastic dartboard and electronic sensors to calculate the scores of each player. The board has a larger bullseye than a standard board and as a result, many competitors aim for a score of 150 from their three darts.

Finishing legs can be achieved by hitting bullseye, a double or even a treble. Put into pairs for each match, Gray lined-up alongside the likes of former BDO World Champion Mark Webster.

Matches were the best of five legs, with a 701 and US Cricket format represented in the opening four, while the fifth was determined by the loser of a dart at the bullseye.

“It really changes the way you play, as it’s so different to what we call darts,” Gray said. “Aiming for bullseye rather than the treble 20 every time was the biggest change. It was an interesting experience and great personally that I got to travel to Asia - where I’d never been before.”

Gray reached the last 16 of the singles where he lost to a Japanese opponent and the same stage of the doubles alongside Webster only to be beaten by Australia.

Gray’s performances in ‘The World’ events currently rank him 33rd and a place inside the top 64 will see him qualify for their World Championships in Hong Kong in December.
