H&B seek to keep up pressure

Smith is expecting a full-strength squad to make the journey to south east London, but is prepared for a tough game against a second-bottom Shoots side that has proven difficult to overcome at home.

“They are very good at home, they’ve started to pick up a few points and they’ve got a big pack. We don’t take any side lightly. We’ve played the bottom sides and they’ve given us games as tough as the top teams,” said Smith.

Second-placed H&B are six points behind leaders Park House despite beating them in their last outing a fortnight ago, and one ahead of third-placed Cranbrook having played an extra game.

A win this weekend is essential to keep H&B within touching distance of the summit and Smith is confident his backs are capable of making a positive impact.

“I want to see the backs be a little more dynamic,” added Smith, whose side ran out 69-0 winners in October’s reverse fixture. “They’ve got the ability and the skill. I know the weather hasn’t been good for us to play a flowing game, but we’re going to stick to our beliefs and play a running game wherever possible.”

Elsewhere, Rye Rugby Club is due to host Hove II in Sussex One. Rye produced an encouraging performance during a 37-10 loss against unbeaten leaders Pulborough in a Sussex Shield semi-final last weekend.
