CHICHESTER ladies fourths' first hockey match of 2016 was played under blue skies and sunshine but in a chilly three degrees - and it ended in a 3-1 defeat to Mid Sussex seconds.

Mid Sussex got off to a slick start with accurate passing and good use of the centre of the pitch, attacking with three or four players spanning the width.

Chichester’s Whittington, Woods and Willway defended well, though, and it wasn’t until a third of the way through the first half that Mid Sussex scored their first goal.

There were some great clearances from the Chichester defensive area by goalkeeper McDonald, with Woods sending many balls up to Dunster on the right wing and Sodenbridger getting forward.

Goddard and Austin had some great runs and Chichester had a few chances on goal in the first half, with some good contributions from the left wing by Jones, but Chi lacked the panache to convert any shots.

Mid Sussex managed two more goals with some skilled hits and at half-time it was 3-0.

Chichester came back very aggressively in the second half, with great passing from defence up to Clark and out to Ashton and Dunster ,who scored a great goal.
