Home players hold the ace in Chichester tennis tournament

Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club hosted a nine-and-under county tour grade five tennis tournament.

It was held in the club’s dome, which houses three indoor courts.

This was a boys’ singles competition and was the latest in a series of tournaments being held at the club over the winter season.

It was organised into two round-robin groups comprising four players per league and each match comprised the best of three tie-breaks to seven points.

The top two players in each group progressed through to the semi-finals with the bottom two going into a consolation draw.

Third place and a bronze medal went to Henry Knapton of Comptons Tennis Club, who beat Freddie Williams of Chichester 12-10, 7-1 in a hard-fought match.

Aidan Randell was runner-up and collected the silver medal while gold was won by Daniel McKitterick. He defeated Randall 7-5, 7-4 in a brilliant final. Both players receive their coaching at the Chichester Tennis Academy at Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club.

Tournament organiser - and newly-crowned Sussex LTA referee of the year 2012 - Peter Cook said: “It was an excellent tournament, with several players getting their first real taste of an LTA competition.

“Support for our tournaments at Chichester has once again been superb, which in turn gives more of our juniors experience at competing against players from other clubs.”
