Just three days after being knocked out of the FA Cup by Chatham Town, the Hornets found themselves 3-0 down inside seven minutes at Gorings Mead, before staging a recovery to pull it back to 3-2 with goals from Tony Nwachukwu and Gabby Odunaike.

Two more goals though before half time saw Burgess Hill 4-2 up at half-time, and three unanswered second half strikes, two on 90 minutes ensured the Hornets trudged off the field red faced.

Both sides selected a number of youth team players, and it proved a tough night in particular for U18 goalkeeper Lewis Blaney, starting his first senior game since his man of the match display in last season’s Brighton Charity Cup final.

Still he was given precious little protection from a more experienced defence as Horsham suffered their biggest defeat of the season.

Burgess Hill’s goals came from Max Miller, Curtis Gayler (two), Pat Harding, Joe Kay (two) and Lee Harding.
