It's a line-up fit for a future king at Fontwell Park

As revealed in the Observer a fortnight ago, Nick Gifford’s aptly-named runner Royal Wedding will make an appearance in the first race of the evening – the Crabbie´s Alcoholic Ginger Beer Handicap Chase – and is sure to attract an army of punters on William and Kate’s big day.

But there were plenty of other horses in initial entries for the six-race card that, should they run, will also attract race-goers who will have seen the happy couple tie the knot at Westminster Abbey earlier in the day.

The field for the Chandlers Mini Worthing Countryman Classic Maiden Hurdle ahead of final declarations contained Midnight King, King’s Realm and Kings Equity.

And Princely Hero will be a popular choice if it goes in the Tricia And Clive 40th Wedding Anniversary Handicap Hurdle or the NGK Spark Plugs Handicap Hurdle.

A huge crowd is expected for Fontwell’s own take on the big day, with advance sales breaking the venue’s records.

As well as the racing, which runs from 5.30 to 8.05pm, there will be a street party theme to much of the meeting, stiltwalkers and a magician at the gate plus traditional British sideshows and band music from the Adur Concert Band. After racing the musical theme continues with a set from The Magic of Take That and Robbie.

Fontwell Park marketing and commercial executive Emma Newbery said: “The interest in the meeting has been phenomenal, particularly the Union Jack and street party packages we’re offering. It should be a great day.”

It’s the first of three evening meetings at Fontwell this year. The others are in June and August – the latter being Ladies’ Night.

Discounted tickets can be booked up to 3pm today but there is admission on the day.

In advance, tickets are £22 for the Premier Enclosure or £17 in the Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure, with a £22 Union Jack package offering drinks and betting vouchers as well as admission. Call 01243 543335.
