Only Scotland came close to derailing England’s victory charge at the Welsh National Sport Centre, Cardiff, but Polegate-based Bennett crucially won his two singles matches and doubles clash to secure a 7-3 victory.

Bennett, who played at no.3 in the four-man team, also made a good account of himself in the individual event, reaching the quarter-finals where he lost to England no.1 and team-mate Hugo Pang, who went on to make the final.
