Juniper buried, but Warren's a winner

There was a top turnout for the Bognor Friday Night League captains and secretaries' knockouts. Last year's winners took their places along with 33 other players.

Among the 17 players in the captains’ knockout, a good draw meant that everyone was in with a chance.

In the first semi-final, Peter Hall from Chi Snooker A took on Claremont Cobras’ Dave Juniper, who took his chances and made it through.

The second semi-final saw Dave Coupland from the Royal Oak B take on Chi Snooker B’s Chris Gatford – the latter proving too strong for Coupland.

In the final, the first two legs were split. The last leg saw Juniper fail to take his chances and Gatford moved in to take the double and the win to retain his title.

The secretaries’ knockout saw 18 players take to the oche. The first semi featured Gary Blackwood from the Claremont Cobras and BRSA’s Mick Delaney. Despite a 180, missed chances from Delaney saw Blackwood make it through to his fourth knockout final this year.

The second semi was between Chi Snooker C’s Nathan Warren and the Wheatsheaf’s Ian Hackett. Despite his best performance for four years, Hackett missed double eight in the last leg to allow Warren through.

In the final, Blackwood wasn’t on top form and Warren struggled with doubles. In the last leg, doubles were reached and after taking out last year’s knockout winner Sam Abrehart in the quarter-finals, Warren took his last double to take the win and the title.
