Ladies flock to Bognor for a tennis triumph

In the morning play, the 15 pairings were put into three groups, with each scheduled to play seven games.

Round one was under way when the forecast rain arrived and players had to take shelter in the club’s newly-refurbished pavilion.

After a long break of over 40 minutes, play resumed and – thankfully – was not interrupted again.

By lunchtime, most of the morning’s round-robin matches had been completed.

The couples who had come top of their group, with the highest games score, were placed into the same section, 
as were the couples who had come second, third, fourth and fifth.

This created five performance-based groups of three couples, with the added incentive of prizes to be won by all players who succeeded in achieving the highest games score in their group.

The highest performing pair of the morning were Alison Cox and Juliet Matthews, who secured an impressive total of 24 games and, following their afternoon’s matches, 
also finished as overall winners.

Runners-up in the top group for the second year running were Ann Woodhead and Doreen Shire, representing Angmering.

Top-scoring prize winners from other sections were Denise Denny and Mandy Snook (Billingshurst, section B), Theresa Parsons and Jo Rees (Storrington, C), Emma and Joy Withers (Angmering, D) and Christina Goodwyn and Suzanna Gray (Angmering/Weald, E).
