Mark's marvel try rounds off great display

London Two SouthJersey 26 Lewes 35LEWES got off the foot of the table with their first away win of the season. They started off with confidence and aggression and it took only five minutes to get points on the board when a forward drive near the host's line was rounded off by lock-forward Lee Raikes.

Two minutes later Jersey won a line-out inside Lewes's 22-metre line and a switched move from the backs allowed centre Steve O'Brien to score under the posts, the try being converted by Steve Mee.

The scoreline became 14-5 three minutes later when a similar move ended with Jersey's full-back Gareth Jeffreys coming into the line for a try, again converted by Mee.

Lewes continued to get their game together, playing a tactically-sound game for perhaps the first time this season. This paid dividends on 38 minutes with a strong forward shove which Jersey could only halt by an illegal move, resulting in a penalty try to Lewes, converted by full-back Neil Rumble for 14-12.

Lewes often forced Jersey into defensive errors or kicks to safety, and just before half-time a fine move saw the ball swiftly passed out wide to winger Sean Taylor. Although he was some 15 metres from the line, and with the Jersey defence moving across to cover, he powered his way through several attempted tackles for a great individual try in the corner to put Lewes 17-14 up at the break.

Lewes pressure was rewarded on the hour when they won good ball from a ruck, switching it out for winger Scott Patto to go crashing into the attack for a try to extend the lead to 22-14.

Ten minutes later another unforced error by Jersey resulted in a penalty to Lewes, fly-half Dave Tyrrell slotting over the kick.

Jersey counter-attacked and put O'Brien away in the corner for a fine try to claw back to 25-19. Lewes did not buckle, and only five minutes later a good ball from in front of Jersey`s posts found its way to Tyrrell, who coolly slotted over a drop-goal for 28-19.

It spurred Jersey into action once more as hooker James Chamier plunged over for a try, converted by Mee.

Lewes responded immediately when centre Mark Griffiths intercepted the ball from 35 metres out and ran to the posts for a great try. Tyrrell kicked the conversion to round off a wonderful day for Lewes.
