Tasty slice of Horsham history makes it to TV

The show, which featured a segment about delicious Horsham Gingerbread, left museum staff fielding enquiries about the delicacy.

Filmed in April, Escape To The Country was aired on Tuesday (October 6) and showed scenes of Horsham and the museum, where the story of Horsham Gingerbread was told by Horsham District Council’s heritage manager Jeremy Knight, before joining Lesley Ward who adapted the recipe for the modern taste in her kitchen.

Lesley has since made gingerbread and a range of other Sussex biscuits available for everyone to enjoy.

The filming included old scenes of Victorian Horsham along with modern day views of the Carfax and Market Square before dealing with the discovery of the Shelley family recipe in the museum archives and the poet’s first known letter where he asks for gingerbread to take on a picnic.

Horsham Gingerbread was developed in 2011 and is now available in selected retailers across the south east – from Bath to Kent.

The programme is available to watch on iPlayer until November 5.

The pictures show Chatfields – one of Horsham’s old gingerbread sellers; gingerbread sellers but not from Horsham; and a Regency picture (1804) which is used on the packaging.
