Nothing less than a win will do

The rugby club will travel by coach to Southwark Lancers tomorow (Saturday) desperate to avoid successive Kent One defeats.

Head coach Kevin Smith said: “We’ve got to win. We’ve lost one game and we don’t want to lose any more; it’s as simple as that.”

Promotion hopefuls H&B have started the season with one win and one loss. They were fixtureless last weekend as a result of the odd number of teams in the division. Southwark have begun with one win and two defeats. Their latest outing on Saturday was a 41-5 reverse at Cranbrook.

“You can’t read too much into it because a lot of teams don’t travel very well,” added Smith. “We need to put the pressure on the opposition during the first 25 minutes; don’t panic or rush or force the pace of the game, but squeeze the life out of the opposition by playing our brand of rugby.”

Rye RFC, meanwhile, is aiming to make it four wins out of four at home to Holbrook tomorrow. The New Roaders have seen off Brighton II, Lewes II and most recently Newick to sit third in Sussex One with 12 points.

Club chairman Tony Pierce said: “They’re always a tough side but confidence is high. We’re at home so we’ll give them a good game and hopefully we can make it four out of four.”

Rye ran out 22-10 winners away to Newick at the weekend despite being without a number of regulars. Most are expected to return against Holbrook including the likes of John Smith, Pete Brown and Joe Morrell. Kick-off is 3pm.
