67 more great pictures from a Storm Boelo-hit Beachy Head Marathon - plus winners' details

It’s a gruelling test at the best of times – but add stormy conditons to the Beachy Head Marathon and you have one hell of a challenge for runners.

But the arrival of Storm Boelo on Saturday didn’t stop the iconic event going ahead … and hundreds taking on – and completing – the marathon, 10k or even the ultra-marathon.

On Sunday, conditions were more favourable for the half marathon, another big-race success for organisers and runners.

On this page and those linked you can see pictures from the event taken by Jon Rigby and Sy Martin. This gallery follows an earlier one here with 103 photos, for sussexworld.co.uk subscribers (it’s easy and cheap to subscribe if you don’t already).

There are vidoes from the race on the Eastbourne Herald Facebook page too and we’ll have coverage in the Herald on Friday.

After a particularly wet and windy run at this year’s event, athletes are celebrating their remarkable race achievements from over the weekend, including a women’s course record in one event.

Thousands of runners took on the iconic South Downs route with Timothy Short being the first across the Marathon finish line with a time of 3:06:32, and Alice Robinson being the first woman back with a time of 3:42:20.

In the Ultra-marathon Joshua Woods managed a sub four-hour run with an impressive time of 3:53:13, while Lizzie Broughton not only placed first in the women’s category but broke the women’s Ultramarathon course record with a time of 4:46:11.

In the 10k, Aaron O’Shaughnessy took the top spot with a time of 41:04, while Meads runner Katie Stephens was the first female home with a time of 45:06.

On Sunday, Steve Feltbower placed first in the Half Marathon with a time of 1:30:12, and Harriet Bloor was the fastest woman back with time of 1:37:33.

Eastbourne Borough Council Lead Member for Tourism & Place Cllr Jenny Williams said: “Congratulations to everyone who braved the weather and took part – you are all incredible! Thank you also to the charities and volunteers who supported the event over the weekend providing a warm welcome under difficult circumstances.

“This year was particularly challenging thanks to not one, but two storms, however the Beachy Head Marathon spirit was alive and well and everyone came together to deliver another fantastic event.”

The Beachy Head Marathon is supported by a number of volunteers and charities including Mankind, Eastbourne Sea Cadets, Birling Gap Coastguard, Beachy Head Ramblers, Seaford Striders, Victoria Baptist Church, St Wilfrid’s Hospice and Hailsham Rotary Club. Each voluntary organisation will receive a donation from the event – with more than £100,000 issued to date. It is also estimated that runners themselves raise a further £100,000 for good causes each year through sponsorship alone.
