Each club, including council-owned sports facilities, make their own decision about when their facilities are ready to open and can be operated safely.

When the lockdown was relaxed greenkeeper John Osmond and his merry band of helpers began to prepare the greens to allow the Buxted Park Bowls Club to start another season of bowling.

With all the fine weather the bowlers were aching to start and, two weeks ago, the greens opened for members... and, in typical English fashion, the heavens opened and they all got soaked.

Over the past two weeks a growing number of members have taken advantage of the excellent greens, observing all of the necessary safety and distancing measures, initially only playing singles but, more recently, being given the option to play pairs.

The hope is to run some internal competitions during the summer months and if at all possible, complete some of the annual club tournaments. Unfortunately, it does look unlikely that any inter-club fixtures will be possible.

However, all the members are thankful the club has been able to open to allow them to get out of their houses, meet friends and to socialise in a safe and controlled environment.

The club communicates in advance with players to advise on social distancing requirements that are being applied on arrival at the club

Buxted Park BC only play on alternate rinks at any one time (keeping an empty rink between rinks that are being played on) While the Government guidance now enables triples play, clubs may also wish to consider alternative formats with reduced numbers per rink – for example singles and pairs – in order for social distancing to be more easily maintained.
