Chichester duo Hollyer and Dunne in flying form

Chichester Runners & AC athlete Fleur Hollyer (under-17) concluded her successful 2020 indoor season with two great personal-best 60m performances.

The first was at the Sussex Indoor Championships at Sutton where she ran a very technically controlled race to register a new 8.28sec PB.

The second came a week later at the England Athletics under-20 indoor championships in Sheffield. Drawn in an unfavourable outside lane, she produced probably her finest start of her athletic career to date.

With a dynamic five stride drive phase, followed by her now familiar strong pick-up phase, she held her form to finish fifth in 8.22sec.

After a short break, her attention will now be focused on the forthcoming outdoor season.

Also at Sheffield was Liam Dunne, who continued his indoor season with sixth place in the 1,500m at the English under-20 indoor championships at Sheffield.

In his first year in the age group, Dunne knew he would have his work cut out to get among the medals as his outdoor best of 4min 01sec was the slowest in the field.

However, the tactics needed for indoor competition can only be gained through the experience of the cut and thrust of jockeying for position on the tight 200m indoor circuit.

It is said that no indoor race is the same and Saturday’s 1,500m proved the point.

After a pedestrian opening lap, one of the athletes made a sudden surge on the outside from the back of the field which left the other athletes fighting to stay in touch.

Dunne by no means disgraced himself in such company and while his time was a relatively modest 4.06, his verdict after the race was that it was good to be facing the best in his age group as well as gaining another valuable learning experience in the process.
