Just a fortnight after setting a new course and race record with a 29min 01sec time in the Chichester contest, the Belgrave Harriers man has set a new record time by any UK athlete in a 5k road race.

In the Monaco 5k Goolab improved the UK best with his time of 13:27 - even though he only finished third.

He replaces Rob Denmark and Mo Farah at the top of the British all-time rankings, the pair having clocked 13:30 in 1996 and 2006 respectively.

It came in a race in which the world 10,000m champion Joshua Cheptegei won in 12.51, taking a staggering 27 seconds off the official global record mark, previously held by Rhonex Kipruto in 13.18.

Goolab’s achievement has delighted organisers of the Chichester race as it strengthens the feeling they managed to attract the highest-quality field ever seen in their event.

And they revealed Goolab has written to them to praise the race and its organisation.
