Trainer Eve Johnson Houghton admitted to having doubts before the race about whether her stable star would like the soft ground caused by a significant amount of rain on the South Downs, but she need not have worried as, with Charlie Bishop on board the 11/10 favourite, he comfortably beat 2025 Sussex Stakes winner Qirat.
Johnson Houghton told the Racing Post: "I'm thrilled, but there's a lot of relief too. I'm so thrilled he's shown everyone how good he is, because I knew he was, but people started to doubt him.
"We knew the ground was turning soft but we thought if we can't run on it now, he's not going to go on it in two months, so let's just see. I was so sick right up until they opened the stalls, but then I saw he seemed to quite like the ground, and I was happy as Larry. He's tough, he loves racing, and he'll find a gap when he needs to."
Zavateri’s win was the highlght of an absorbing afternoon’s racing which was not helped by poor weather – the sort that has not been seen at Goodwood all season.
Other winners were Silverella, Forty Years On, Too Soon (for Sussex trainers the Moores), Chimes of Thunder, Goologong and Naana’s Sparkle.

Today (Sunday) is the third and final day of the August Bank Holiday meeting and a seven-race card has the Group Three Prestige Fillies’ Stakes as the headline. It is supported by a novice race, a selling stakes and four handicaps.
Read on for a preview of and tips for the Goodwood card, brought to you by Sporting Life.
A mile two-year-olds’ novice is first (13.25). Odell and Rossbeigh are both newcomers and could be good on debut, but there is already some good existing form on the card. Flight Tracker was only narrowly beaten at Sandown first time out, while Mister Whippy went close last time at Newbury. See The Mountain has also been improving. Flight Tracker is the easiest to fancy having shown signs of inexperience last time and he should take a step forward here.
Race two is a mile handicap (14.00). Drifts Away seeks a hat-trick here and just might be able to get to the front on his new mark, but others are more attractive. Masked Warrior has been consistent this term despite a rising mark and he looks fairly handy here, but Oliver Show is better proving over an undulating track and goes well at Goodwood. He should run to a place at the very least and can win for the in-form trainer and jockey combination.
Next is a six-furlong handicap (14.35). Ardisia is in much easier company this time and could get to the front now under Oisin Murphy. Fandom looks attractive but is drawn quite wide, while Flash Harry makes a fair amount of appeal now two pounds below a good run last time at York. His trainer Clive Cox is having a good season and he could be the one here.
Our feature is the Prestige Fillies’ Stakes; a seven-furlong race for two-year-old fillies (15.10). This looks a hot race and finding a winner might not be easy with so much good form on show. Nuit d’Eclair is the top rated of those with a mark, and her form suggests plenty of promise here. She has already finished the close runner-up in Group Three company and should be right there today. Light Of Dawn steps up in trip here and could have more to offer, while the once-raced Coaxed must be taken seriously too, having beaten a very smart Godolphin filly on debut.
Following is a selling stakes race run over a mile and three furlongs (15.45). Gloryous and Echalar both won their latest starts so look good in this sort of race, but they’re not overly well proven on tracks with this level of undulation. Dunkeld Dreamer, on the other hand, is very at home on a varying surface so might be the pick here.
Second to last is the two-mile City Of Chester Handicap (16.20). Bahadur won over course and distance in the Spring and could be handicapped to win this now, but his recent form has left something to be desired. Marnier is in better form and looks competitive, while Maxident can make a splash here too. Synergism might be helped by some first-time cheekpieces too.
Finally, we conclude with a 10-furlong handicap (16.55). Alcaraz is on a nice mark now but ran poorly here last time, while First Ambition’s course credentials are stronger after a good midfield finish here last time and a pound reduction in the weights since. Thinthread might have a chance of placing also, having run nicely here despite an unattractive form figure on the day.
