Mid Sussex Hockey Club celebrate season with online awards

All were encouraged to dress appropriately and generally compliance was excellent! In several hours of excellent banter, silly games and a certain amount of excess, a number of awards were presented by skipper David Lowries in response to a series of nominations from team members.

The winners were as follows:

Most Optimistic Shot: Hands down winner was young George Sutherland for relentless failed attempts at the reverse tomahawk shot and who justified it “sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t”!

Goal of the Season: This was split between Rob Benjamin and Bernard O’Mara as the outcome couldn’t be recalled by the befuddled author! However, they reflected a few glorious goals where the ball was worked out quickly from defence, through midfield and into the D for perfect counter-attacking goals

Dope of the Year: Toby Colvin was the stand-out contender for his habitual lack of passing! “I just like the ball” was his valiant defence but.....! Runner-up was Lawrence Trigwell for his numerous tumbles and assaults in the name of “tackling”

Nosebleed of the Season (awarded usually to a defender who finds themselves in attack): Captain David Lowries won this unanimously for repetition. Asked if he would prefer to play up front he replied “I can’t shoot and it’s just that defences kept parting in Moses fashion”

Dopey Moment of the Year: This was hotly contested between Charlie “I’ve brought no shoes” Elwell-Sutton, George Sutherland, but awarded to Koen Overeynder for needling the oppo’s centre-forward only to be gloriously rinsed by him moments later.

And finally the two key awards with engraved trophies to presented at a future date:

Most Improved Player: Alex Hillier. Hillier complimented his colleague for his work off the ball and praised the whole team for giving him an enjoyable season and wished them well as he would be away at college for the next couple of years.

Player of the Year: Nominations included Stephen Hillier, David Lowries, Sam “Noah” Nash, Alex Hardwicke and the worthy winner was Rob “Best of a Bad Bunch” Benjamin.

And so, as several hours of joyful excess drew to a close it remained for the whole side to sincerely thank David Lowries for two year of highly enjoyable hockey as he steps down from the role of captain and he finished by stating “what a great bunch of people play hockey for Mid Sussex”.
