Picture special: Remembering the 2019 Uckfield Grand Prix

Covid-19 put paid to the 2020 Uckfield Festival – which meant the loss of of the highlights of the week, the Uckfield Grand Prix. By way of a consolation, photographer Ron Hill has raided his archives to look back at the 2019 event.

Organised by Uckfield College and Uckfield Rotary Club, held in TR Fastenings car rark, it is a popular event with a nail-biting finish.

Ron says: “Over around 20 years this event has evolved from being a pedal car race to a highly efficient electric kit car Grand Prix. The Rotary Club started it and it’s been run every year – until 2020.

“The driving force behind it is Rory O’Connor. head of technology at Uckfield College, who has built up a strong team of Rotarians, friends and students to plan each year’s event. Organisers are grateful for the support of T R’s Geoff Budd and Malcolm Diamond.

“About 20 teams of 10 and 11-year olds from Uckfield and district primary schools competed in 2019. Each team created their own 24 volt electric-powered Greenpower Goblin kit car, with speeds of 15 mph.

“Each race saw four teams complete 12 laps as 1,000-plus spectators watched. Rocks Park Primary School Uckfield took top spot, edging out Nutley Primary into second and Manor Primary third.” See the pictures on this page and the ones linked - all by Ron Hill / @hillphotographic
