Lloyd Gofton writes: Young players, aged 10 to 14, were given hands-on coaching from Quins players Sheree Cooper, Lauren Brooks and Jessie Spurrier – learning new skills, trying fun drills and experiencing the intensity and excitement of rugby at the highest level. The Harlequins stars also took time to share their own rugby journeys, inspiring the girls to see what is possible in the women’s game.
“This was such a brilliant opportunity for our players,” said Shelley McComiskey, Director of Women’s & Girls Rugby. “To be coached by professionals while the Women’s Rugby World Cup is in full flow here in England couldn’t be more perfect. It’s a fantastic time for girls to get into rugby, and our hope is that this session shows them just how far the game can take them.”
The evening didn’t stop there, after an action-packed session, the players stayed on for autographs, selfies and lots of conversation. The smiles on the girls’ faces said it all: this was an experience they’ll never forget. The atmosphere at Burgess Hill RFC was buzzing, with parents, coaches and supporters all impressed by the energy, confidence, and teamwork on display. Our amazing rugby family environment was mentioned a few times and each girl left with big smiles, new skills and the knowledge that they are part of a fast-growing and exciting sport.
Thanks went to Harlequins Women and Harlequins Foundation for making this wonderful event a reality. The Women’s Rugby World Cup is currently being staged in England, bringing global attention to the women’s game and inspiring the next generation of players.
Burgess Hill RFC is encouraging local girls to give rugby a try. “We’re building something really special here at Burgess Hill” added Gary Wenban, Head Coach, Girls Rugby. “Women’s rugby is booming, and this is the perfect moment to join. Whether you’re completely new to the sport or have played before, there’s a place for you in our team.”
