Outdoor bowls season gets traditional start in Chichester

Greenkeeper Mick Page has done a fantastic job during the winter months, and from the very first few woods, the green bowled well, taking turn – and they didn’t need heaving up.

Everyone managed 12 ends before the weather took a turn for the worse, which brought a premature end to proceedings.

The captain and presidents welcomed new members to the club and wished everyone a good and enjoyable season.

The club is open to new and existing bowlers. If anyone would like to give the game a go, please come along to Priory Park and introduce yourself to any of the members.

Roll-up sessions take place every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to midday, and there is a full programme of friendly and competitive league matches throughout the season.

WITTERINGS

The club’s open day was well attended in mainly-sunny weather.

Visitors tried their hand at bowling and the club attracted some new members.

There were various other activities and stalls including target bowls, putting, a plant sale and a raffle.

The club thanked all those who helped and attended the event to mark the start of the outdoor season.

DONNINGTON

The presentation of trophies for the internal club competitions for the 2011-12 season has taken place.

Finalists: Ladies singles - winner Marjorie Beasley, runner-up Maggie Maggs; men’s singles - Terry Taws; runner-up Trevor Wilson; Plate singles - winner Vic Mitchell; Invitation pairs - winners Maggie Maggs & Trevor Wilson; runners-up Anne & John Roberts; Drawn pairs - winners Marjorie Beasley & Terry Taws; runners-up Sue Buckle & Les Stewart; Chairman’s trophy - winners Anne Roberts, Vic Mitchell & Dave Turner; Captain’s Shield - winners Joan Jones, Trevor Wilson & Maggie Maggs.

ARUN

Well done to Arun Ladies on winning their league.

They played their last game of the season against Worthing and won on six rinks.

There has been very good bowling by Arun throughout the season as they’ve won nine out of ten games, taking 85 points out of 110.

NYETIMBER

Nyetimber had a convincing win when Yapton visited them. Nyetimber won on all three mats.

LAVANT

Lavant Red’s final match of the season was at home to Ashington Swans. Mat one recovered from a slow start but lost by four shots.

On mat two, consistent scoring throughout got them a 12-shot win. In the friendly Ashington pulled ahead over the last few ends to take the game by three shots. Reds, needing six points from this match, gained only four.

Scores: P Winter, J Sharrod, R Peirce, J Simms lost 18-14; P Whale, P Beardmore, T Bleach, R Harding won 26-14; (friendly) T Boxall, K Fancy, J Powell, P Lee lost 19-16.

CHARITY FOURS

The West Sussex Short Mat Bowling Association raised £500 for the RNLI as the mixed club team of Chris Page, Ben Haulkham, Chris Rolph and Marc Lancaster retained the Charity Fours title they’d won the previous season.

A total of 27 teams from West Sussex and Surrey contested the competition at Westergate’s Six Villages Sports Centre.

Trophies were presented to both sets of finalists by tournament organiser Rod McBeth and West Sussex chairman Peter Winter.
